Translucent coloring of layers did allow seeing through layer items, but sometimes had inconsistent coloring which was different than the color specified for that layer.

Translucent Colors (inconsistent coloring): One suggestion may be to set the "Background Color" to "Black" (instead of the default "White Background" color). Then when you use translucent colors it should give you a better result. To change the background color, go to the Options Dialog (menu: Setup | Options...), select tab "View" and choose "Black" for Background Color option. Press OK, and colors should update.
